Lot Essay

Two related designs from the Etchings of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory held in the archive of Sir John Soane's Museum, London are illustrated in, John Davis, Antique Garden Ornament, Woodbridge, 1991, p.345.
A pair of stamped 'Coade Stone' finials of almost identical design were sold, The Michael Roberts Collection of Garden Ornaments, Christie's, Ashurst, Kent, 27 September 2004, lot 278 (£35,850, inc.).
