Lot Essay

By the late 1960s, the European avant-garde had adopted a futuristic aesthetic that embraced modern, hygienic industrial materials to deliver a vision of Tomorrow that celebrated the awakening of the Space Age. Of monumental, totemic scale, French designer Henri Mathieu's illuminated structure invokes a solitary planetary form, defined by massive, adjustable louvres of polished steel enclosing multiple lighting clusters, to effect a stylized Lunar eclipse.
