Lot Essay

The present sculpture is after the bronze of the Capitoline Wolf, suckling the infants Romulus and Rebus following her rescue of them from the Tiber, housed in the Musei Capitolini, Rome. The dating of the original, previously accepted as an Etruscan antiquity, has been called into question by recent testing and is still under debate.
