A 16th century gilt 'Papal' ring
The large ring set with an opaque dark green Roman paste rectangular panel, the heavy gilt mount engraved and decorated on the sides with the symbols of the evangelists in high relief, the hoop engraved with an armorial shield flanked by the inscription PIUS PAIX, circa 1580

Private collection, Germany; acquired 1960-1981, and thence by descent to the present owner.

Dalton states that The purpose of these rings is not certain and that they were used as emblems of investiture or as credentials. They were always made of gilt bronze or copper and set with stones of little worth or with glass pastes. A similar ring can be seen in collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, case 6A, no. 22
