Lot Essay

Louis Solon's Illustrated Journal records a design entry for this distinctive ceramic form just after Christmas vacation in early January of 1888. The design for the pâte-sur-pâte surface decoration, titled 'Vases Baigneuses', follows in the spring. The subsequent entry in his diary is for the 'Jubilee Vase' displayed at the Paris Universelle Exhibition of 1889 and sold Christie's, New York, 24 October 2006, lot 139.

For another pair see the Estate of Robert Hecht, Christie's, New York, 11 October 1988, lot 439 and sold again by Skinner's, Boston, 12 July 2008, lot 19. For additional single examples, see Skinner's, Boston, 12 October 1996, lot 97; and The Estate of Dorothy Beller, Christie's, New York, 11 April 2007, lot 294.

For an example titled 'Fire', see J. Jones, Minton, The First Two Hundred Years of Design & Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, p. 197; this vase is also featured as August in the Minton Vases, Calendar of 1999. The pair 'Fire' and 'Water' was subsequently sold, The Masterpieces of Minton, Selected Items from the Minton Museum Collection, Bonhams, London, 23 July 2002, lot 183.

Hence including the present pair, a total of eight vases of this form are currently extant.
