Lot Essay
Louis Solon's Illustrated Journal records a design entry for this distinctive ceramic form just after Christmas vacation in early January of 1888. The design for the pâte-sur-pâte surface decoration, titled 'Vases Baigneuses', follows in the spring. The subsequent entry in his diary is for the 'Jubilee Vase' displayed at the Paris Universelle Exhibition of 1889 and sold Christie's, New York, 24 October 2006, lot 139.

Hence including the present pair, a total of eight vases of this form are currently extant.
