Lot Essay

Solon's Illustrated Journal records this flask as one of a pair titled 'Saute-Mouton' and 'Exercice & Repos.' completed between the 11th of June 1879 and the 11th of July 1879. Literally the title translates as 'Jump-Sheep' but is a children's game better known in English as 'Leap-Frog'. Here Cupid, the god of love, is tripped-up as he tries to leap over Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. Also compare, Christie's, New York, 21 October 2008, lot 2 for a pair of this form.
