Lot Essay

In her photographs, Lale Tara questions reality by blurring the limits between her experiences and her imagination. She constructs her sceneries with mute objects, dolls and surrogates which she places in various symbolic spaces. The inanimate surrogates embody the artist herself and allow her to reexamine the iconic construction independent of a linear timeline or a specific geopolitical placement. The viewer is pulled into a world that transcends the rational mind as the subject, mute and pliable, acts as the artist's ghostly double and reflects her desires and commands.

The present work was exhibited at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art in 2011 in the artist's successful solo show Innocent Surrogates.
