Lot Essay

Although not stamped, these richly carved chaises can be confidently attributed to the celebrated menuisier Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard (maître in 1717), or his son Jean-Jacques Baptiste Tilliard (maître in 1752), on the basis of close similarities with their known oeuvre. A pair of chaises by the son, with similar distinctive scrolled ornament to the junction of the back and back legs, formerly in the collection of Akram Ojjeh, is illustrated in B.G.B. Pallot, L'Art du Siège au XVIIIe Siècle en France, Paris, 1987, pp. 207-8, while a further pair of chaises by Tilliard with the same distinctive cabochon clasps to the crest-rail and seat-rail, is illustrated in J. Nicolay, L'Art et la Manière des Maîtres Ebénistes Français, Paris, 1956, p. 459, fig. N.
