Lot Essay

The subject of the present lot derives from Judges XI: 30-40. On the eve of battle against the Ammonites, the great Israelite warrior Jephthah made a pact with God. In return for victory, he promised to sacrifice the first creature to come out of his house to meet him upon his return. The battle won, Jepththah returns home to be greeted with tambourines and dances by his only daughter.
