Lot Essay

The five-hour silent movie Die Nibelungen created by Austrian director Fritz Lang in 1924 in two parts: Die Nibelungen: Siegfried and Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge is an Expressionist adaptation of the 13th century mythological Song of the Nibelungen.
In 1921, Lang and his wife, screenwriter Thea Von Harbou, initiated a series of films about the character of 'Doctor Mabuse', complex, action-packed films filled with spies, betrayal, chases and gadgets. The success allowed Lang and Von Harbou to create the 'Die Nibelungen' films which eventually led to their masterpiece, Metropolis produced in 1927.
Israil Davidovitch Bograd was a Moscow based avant-garde stage and poster designer and a member of the same avant-garde circle that included the Stenberg Brothers and Alexander Rodchenko. His poster for Die Nibelungen depicts powerful Siegfried to the right and makes reference to the two-part series on the left. Very few Russian posters were produced in such a large format during this period, and this example - printed on two sheets - is understood to be the only known copy of Die Nibelungen to have survived.
