TWO INSCRIBED FAMILLE ROSE BOWLS
19TH CENTURY
Each bowl is potted with tall sides rising to a flaring mouth rim, supported on a short tapering foot. One bowl is shaped with octagonal sides and the other has a foliate rim. Both bowls are delicately painted to the exterior with scenes depicting the different stages involved in tilling and weaving, with inscriptions and seal marks complementing the scenes depicted.

Lot Essay

The scenes on the current bowls depict the Gengzhi tu, 'Pictures of Tilling and Weaving', which was originally compiled by Lou Shou (1090-1162), published around 1237 during the Song dynasty. These inscriptions and pictures describe the processes of planting and weaving.
