TWO RARE FAMILLE ROSE ARMORIAL DISHES
EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Each dish is delicately potted and bearing the arms of Pope Pius XI to the centre. One is decorated around the cavetto with four roundels containing famring scenes, each representing one of the four seasons and reserved on a yellow ground densely enamelled with lotus scrolls. The exterior is decorated with the Eight Buddhist Emblems borne on meandering scrolls. The other dish is painted with two iron-red ferocious dragons flanking the coat of arms, the exterior is similarly decorated. The base of both dishes bears a twelve-character iron-red mark reading Zhongguo Jiangxi Jingdezhen Tianzhu Tang Jianzhi.

Lot Essay

The twelve-character inscription to the bases may be translated as 'Made under the supervision of the hall of God, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, China'

These dishes are remarkable in their combination of strong Chinese and Western elements. The coats of arms are those of Pope Pius IX (1922-39), a celebrated pope with strong links to Asia, establishing in 1922 the first position of Apostolic Delegate to China. On the 10th of September 1938 Pope Pius IX held a reception for an official delegation from China at Castel Gandolfo, when the current dishes were most likely presented to him.
