ALKEN, Henry. Characteristic Sketches of Hunting with Caricatures of Middlesex Sporting. London: J. Dickinson, May-June 1825 [no watermark]. Oblong 4° (215 x 273mm), 12 unumbered hand-coloured etched plates. (Some marginal repairs, a few pinholes at margins, light dust-soiling, faint creasemark to each plate.) Original green embossed wrappers with yellow title label printed in black (rebacked in cloth, front cover with repaired tear). Together with an uncoloured copy of the same work, also dated May 1825, in original wrappers with yellow title label. Both copies preserved together in a green morocco-backed clamshell case.
Presuambly a different issue to the previous lot as the plates are unnumbered. The colour variations are interesting with this set showing a broader palette. Sold with it is a plain set with no colouring. Both are in embossed green wrappers. The cover labels, which differ typographically and in shade of yellow, give the same price of fifteen shillings. Schwerdt I, p. 11 (dated 1826): 'Scarce. Only one other set, and that imperfect, has come to our notice'; Siltzer p. 72 (dated 1826); Tooley 19. (2)
