Lot Essay

This picture was executed in 1852, the year Goodall was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. The subject was deemed so successful that it was developed by the artist into one his major early works: An Episode in the Happier Days of Charles I. This was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853, no. 248, and is now in Bury Museum and Art Gallery.
