The deep conical bowl on ring foot, the interior with two fish in iron oxide surrounded by a double band over the iron-speckled porcelain ground, the exterior and rim in tenmoku, under a thin, bluish-white nuka glaze, two firing cracks to the rim which have been repaired in gold lacquer by Bernard Leach, impressed seals B.L. and St. Ives to the base

Lot Essay

Although bowls with this decoration are rare, Leach is thought to have made around fifty tall vases decorated with fish in this style (for a fish ink drawing see lot 108). He recorded that each fish was "made by one brush stroke, which is then combed".
