The subject of Narcissus appears several times in Franz von Stuck's late work, and this painting is closely related to a version of the subject painted by the artist in 1926 (see H. Voss, Franz von Stuck 1863-1928, Werkkatalog der Gemälde, Munich, 1973, no. 584/273).
