Finely painted after Raphael with the apotheosis of Galatea, the mythic beauty depicted in flight in a dolphin drawn chariot surrounded by sea creatures, a sea nymph being abducted by a Triton at the left, the rinceau scroll banded border interrupted by rosette medallions

Lot Essay

Inspired by the poem "Stanze per la giostra" by Angelo Poliziano, the Italian painter Raphael Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520) created the original fresco of this subject in 1512 for the Villa Farnesina, Rome.
