Original capsule cut to reveal fully branded cork. Slightly bin-soiled label. Level base of neck. In carton
Tasting Note: Unsurprisingly magnificent. Not tasted until it had nearly and effortlessly reached its quarter century. It was fabulous: deep, rich, rounded, more than faultless, impregnable. I had to wait 15 years to have the chance to taste it again, blind. I thought it must have been a '45, '47 or '49, plumping for the latter. I was wrong, but not all that far out. Opaque, rich, ripe, sweet, full, chunky. More recently, in 1990, noting its mature rim, somewhat malty nose which sat in the glass, not budging. Incredibly sweet though so full-bodied that the alcohol was positively burning. High extract, with tannin and acidity. I hate to be condescending but this is not my style of wine. Perhaps just as well as one has to be a multimillionaire to buy it. Though I have to admit noting a perfect magnum at the Eigensatz tasting. Most recently, two bottles, appearance less deep, lively but its mature colour displaying an orange rim. One bottle with rich bouquet but a whiff of oxidation and sour on the palate, the other more attractive. Last tasted June 2004. At best ***** M.B.
