Lot Essay

The present painting shows a likeness to a portrait by Maes in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux (inv. no. 223), which has been identified as Adriaen Schagen (1633-1699), Town Councellor and later burgomaster of Alkmaar and an elder statesman of Alkmaar and the Area.
