NICHOLAS II -- A collection of menus relating to the coronation of Nicholas II, 4-26 May 1896.

23 menus printed on card embossed with the Russian imperial eagle in gilt (201 x 130mm), each menu dated in manuscript. (Some soiling, one leaf torn.) Bound together in light blue cloth by M.B. Heede of Riga with his stamp, upper side blocked in blue and titled in gilt, printed endpaper (extremities rubbed, some soiling). With, tipped-in, an additional printed menu for dinner at the Embassy of Iran dated 29 March 1896. Provenance: Prince Barclay de Tolly (inscription on additional menu) or Jean Boulder (binding).

A collection of consecutive menus for every dinner in the three weeks leading up to the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II on 26 May 1896. Although the venue is not given, each menu is printed on card embossed with the imperial eagle, suggesting that the dinners were held at an official Russian venue. The menus may have been collected by Prince Barclay de Tolly, or by Jean Boulder, chef de cuisine at the Embassy of China. Barclay de Tolly is descended from Field Marshall Prince Michael Barclay de Tolly, Minister of War during Napoleon's invasion in 1812.
