SHTORKH, Andrei Karlovich (1766-1835; a.k.a. Heinrich Storch). Tableau Historique et Statistique de L'Empire de Russie à la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Basel and Leipzig: J. Decker and J.F. Hartknoch, 1802.
4 parts in 2 volumes, 8° (212 x 140mm). With half titles. Two engraved folding maps handcoloured in outline, 3 folding tables. (A few leaves lightly browned, short tears in the margins of one folding map, tear in the margin of one leaf.) Contemporary red morocco, flat spines gilt in compartments, gilt border to sides, gilt edges, turn-ins with Greek key motif in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Tsarskoe Selo (stamp in each volume).
THE TSARSKOE SELO COPY, BOUND HANDSOMELY IN RED MOROCCO, of one of the most valuable contemporary studies of the political economy of Russia. Shtorkh, a populariser of Adam Smith in Russia, was strongly opposed to serfdom which he saw as one of the key obstacles to Russia's growth. This probably contributed to Shtorkh's difficulties in winning the censors' approval for the Russian-language version, and the work was first published in German at Riga in 1795. (2)
