TURGENEV, Ivan (1818-1883). Photographic portrait of Turgenev, inscribed by the author to Egor Petrovich Kovalevskii, on the verso of the mount, signed and dated 1866.
Carte de visite photograph (97 x 55mm) mounted on card (105 x 60mm) printed recto and verso, by Carjat & Cie, 56 rue Laffitte, showing Turgenev half-length (very shallow crease, light soiling, minor spotting in the mount). Provenance: Ivan Turgenev (presentation inscription to:) -- Egor Petrovich Kovalevskii (1809-1868) -- '[?P] 511' (pencilled on the mount).
A RARE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF TURGENEV, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, in Russian: 'To Egor Petrovich Kovalevskii, our honourable Chairman. I. Turgenev. 1866'. Kovalevskii was Chairman and founding member of the literary fund and society for the benefit of needy authors and scholars. He wrote several works of history and travel, notably missions to Khiva and Beijing, and distinguished himself in the defence of Sebastopol.
