2° (320 x 215 mm). Woodcut device on title, numerous woodcut illustrations and almost 500 illustrations of surgical instruments. (Without 2B8 [blank], Z3 and Z4 with small repairs and apparently supplied from another copy, occasional browning and soiling, some marginal waterstaining, a few small repairs.) Contemporary boards (a few stains, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Franscesco de Brighi, Venice (ownership inscription).
FIRST EDITION OF CROCE'S MAJOR WORK which was republished in 1587 and 1596 in Latin and in 1574 in Italian. A compilation of important authorities from Hippocrates to Abulcasis, it is distinguished by the surprisingly modern recommendations for wound management and its high quality of illustration. Divided into 7 books, the work covers all branches of contemporary medicine and is highly renowned for its description of surgical instruments; it analyzes cures for abscesses and tumors and considers the best ways to treat gunshot wounds; it describes ways to prevent bleeding, and gives treatments for ulcers, bone fractures and many other illnesses.
