Lot Essay

The present lot shows 'Het Huis met de Hoofden' (The House with the Heads) at the Keizersgracht 123 in Amsterdam. It was designed by Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621) and built in 1622.
The painting was commissioned by the Royal Shell Company. Schuhmacher did not just copy the house. The artist transformed the colours in soft and delicate tones and left all the cars, vehicles and human figures out of the composition, trying to bring the house back to its original 17th-century state.
