ORTON, Joe (1933-1967). Typed letter signed ('Joe Orton') to Miss M.E. Holt, 25 Noel Road, London, 24 August 1965, 'My views on the censorship are simple -- get rid of it', reporting on the changes made to his plays not only by the Lord Chamberlain, but by local censors on tours: 'In Bournemouth the word "Brothel" was strongly objected to. In Manchester lines like "Where does he beget all these unwanted children?" "He does it on crowded dance floors doing the rhumba". Caused such a sensation that the police were sent to enquire whether or not these particular lines had been passed by the L.C.', two pages, 4to (yellow staining from tape at margins, touching signature); with further letters to the same recipient contributing to her thesis on contemporary censorship of drama, July - December 1965, from authors including John OSBORNE ('I am in favour of total abolition of censorship and leave myself open to common law ...'), Alan AYCKBOURN ('I've had no personal experience of censorship ... (said he primly)' David Mercer (providing a list of objectionable phrases from Ride a Cock Horse and describing the process of haggling over changes, 'The scene, as you can imagine, is one of great comedy -- suave, urbane men bandying "obscenities" around with deadpan faces ...'), and ten others (tape marks to all letters).
