HOMMAIRE de Hell, Xavier (d. 1848). Voyage en Turquie et en Perse. Paris: P. Betrand, 1854-59. Atlas volume only, 2° (650 x 395mm). 59 tinted lithographic plates and engraved maps only (of 119), loose as issued and containing 66 illustrations. (Lacking 60 plates, some small tears and some occasional spotting, mainly marginal.) Original backed boards lettered in black (lacking spine and ties, stained and rubbed).
FIRST EDITION. The complete work was published between 1854 and 1859 and comprised text volumes in 8° and the present atlas volume in 2°. Hommaire de Hell's impressive work remained unfinished at his death; he was appointed engineer in charge of public works at Costantinople in 1835 and he conducted a survey of the shores of the Caspian Sea visiting also Armenia and Persia and particularly Isfaham, Qom and Teheran. He died of fever in August 1848 at Ispahan. A list of the plate numbers present in this copy is available in our condition report on www.christies.com.
