FIRST EDITION, inscribed on the front free endpaper and dated 1 December 1908. Churchill's travelogue of his 1907 'pilgrimage' to Uganda and east Africa, in his capacity as Undersecretary of State for Colonies. Much of the material originally appeared in the Strand Magazine, but Churchill added 10,000 words for the book, which he describes as 'the lighter side of what was to me a very delightful and inspiring journey.' He hoped the book 'may vivify and fortify the interest of the British people in the wonderful estates they have recently acquired in the northeastern quarter of Africa'. On the title page the publisher touts the 61-illustrations, including 'photographs by the author.' This is the only book in the Churchill canon that contains his photographs. It also contains dramatic photos of Churchill of some of his kills on safari (one of which is also used for the woodcut on the front cover). Woods A12.
