Lot Essay

The label refers to electuarium lenitivum, an electuary having a mild purgative action and made from senna, tamarind pulp, polypody rhizome, liquorice and other ingredients.

A drug jar, also dated 1668 and with identical decorative elements is illustrated by Louis Lipski and Michael Archer, Dated English Delftware, London, 1984, p. 374, no. 1622.
