Lot Essay

Isabella II, eldest daughter of King Ferdinand VII of Spain, came to the throne as a child but her succession was disputed by the Carlists who refused to recognise a female sovereign. After a turbulent reign, maintained by the support of the army, she was finally deposed in the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1868 and abdicated in 1870. Her son, Alfonso XII became king in 1874.
