Lot Essay
John Smart painted Richard and Susannah Gomonde twice in 1790. The present portrait was originally framed in a double-locket with a portrait of her husband but the works were separated some time between 1969 and 1977.
The other portrait of Mrs Gomonde, in a locket frame with plaited hair and initials SG, is in the Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo, Buenos Aires as part of the Zubov collection. It was formerly in the Peter Jones Collection, sold Sotheby's, London, 10 November 1957, lot 23. The other portrait of her husband, mounted in a seed-pearl frame which is almost identical to the present lot, was included in this sale as lot 22. Both were later sold Christie's, London, 10 June 1963, lot 188 (360 gns to Allfree) and lot 187 (280 gns to Guichard), respectively. The portrait of Mrs Gomonde was later sold Christie's, London, 20 February 1973, lot 100 and the portrait of her husband was sold Christie's, London, 12 July 1988, lot 219.
Susannah Gomonde was the daughter of John Ellerker of Risbey Park, York. She married Richard Gomonde.
