Lot Essay

Dr. Ludwig Meyer proposed an attribution to Lucas Gassel at the time of the Sotheby's 2004 sale, comparing the structure of the landscape and handling of the trees with Gassel's The Flight into Egypt of 1542, in the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (see W.S. Gibson, A Mirror of the Earth: The World Landscape in sixteenth-Century Flemish Painting, Princeton, 1989, pl. 2.6).
