Lot Essay

The highly spirited personality of this as yet unidentified sitter has been beautifully evoked in this portrait. Although an attribution has proven difficult to establish, the work's style points to the hand of a German painter travelling to Venice and North Italy in the third quarter of the eighteenth century.
