Lot Essay

Visiting Venice for the first time in 1850, Cooke spent much of his time out on the Lagoon sketching the landscape around Venice. On 14 September 1850 he noted that 'at 5 started again rowed out close to Lido, following and sketching bragozzi going out....-most marvellous rich sunset - at ½ p 7 to tea'.
