Lot Essay

In 1926 Laura joined her husband who was carrying out portrait commissions in Baltimore, USA. Arising from the artist's great friendship with William S. Baer, the orthopedic surgeon at Johns Hopkins Memorial Hospital, Knight gained consent to go round the wards in the hospital and execute drawings and sketches, resulting in the present portrait illustrating one of the nurses.

We are grateful to John Croft for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
