Literature
The 1858 proceedings of the Zoological Society of London report that on 4th July 1857 a collection of Himalayan game birds arrived in Blackwall after nearly four months on board the 'Prince of Wales.' This medal recognizes Viscount Canning for the 'great and liberal exertions' he took in assembling the collection of birds which were brought down to Calcutta from the 'most elevated zones of the Himalaya'. (D.W. Mitchell, Proceedings of The Zoological Society of London,1858, p. 544-545).
