Lot Essay

This photograph of Robert Peary was taken aboard the expedition ship Roosevelt at Cape Sheridan soon after his return from the Pole in April 1909. The explorer's hooded sheepskin jacket is trimmed with white foxtails, and only the fatigue and nervous tension show in the face of the man who had just found the North Pole.
