Lot Essay

After beginning his career in diplomacy, Russell (1879-1955) became a distinguished member of the College of Arms, appointed Lancaster Herald (1922) and Clarenceux King of Arms (1954). He also published extensively on the works and letters of William Blake, as well as Drawings by Guercino in 1923. He formed a fine collection of Old Master drawings (see Lugt 2770a).
