Lot Essay

Richard Winkler was born in 1969 and as a boy, he was inspired by his grandfather, a painter, who later gave him his first lessons. He developed a love for the human anatomy and often participated in life model drawing classes. Winkler later went on to work as a freelance illustrator for magazines, advertising and television. Concurrently, Winkler was also painting independently and held several solo exhibitions, some of which were inspired by his trips to Sri Lanka and Paris during these years.

In 1997, Winkler decided to pursue painting as a full-time career and moved to Bali. A harmonious blend of tropical vegetation and physical human form, Winkler maintains a distinct visual language by constantly developing and enhancing the forms, weaving them into poetically rhythmic compositions. Plentiful Harvest (Lot 592) is an archetypal piece in Winkler's body of work; layers of bright colours, coupled with a glazing technique to create intense and multi-dimensional colours, the sensually tubular forms of his figures and landscapes narrate the calm sensuous nature of life in the tropics.

He continues his exploration of the human body and its contours into the realm of three dimensional sculptures. This is unsurprising, given that his paintings already exhibit very sculptural qualities, recreating the texture and eroticism of his landscapes and human forms in sculpture only serves to heighten the remarkable quality of his paintings. The choice of bronze as medium is borne of the consideration that bronze is an extremely durable material and has an element of posterity. In My Soul, There is a Temple (Lot 593) harks back to a time where Winkler's works take on an abstract quality in three-dimensional form. It appears be an almost architectural celebration of the human form - a temple to nature and the female form.
