Lot Essay

Nous pouvons comparer cette oeuvre à un masque de même type publié dans Primitivisme dans l'art du 20ème siècle (Rubin, W., 1987, p.264) et appartenant au Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale de Tervuren. Rubin rapproche ce masque du visage d'une femme peinte par Picasso dans Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (The Moma, New York), tous deux présentant une formidable recomposition du visage humain. Le masque illustré ici a la particularité d'avoir conservé sa coiffe d'origine et de présenter une déformation faciale extrêmement prononcée, la bouche se retrouvant au niveau de la joue gauche.
