Lot Essay

In a letter to be sold with Industrial Scene near Oldham, the present owner's stepmother, Barbara Adams, wrote, 'I bought this drawing from L.S. Lowry in 1962 over a private lunch in a small restaurant in Jermyn Street. The lunch had been arranged by Charles Anthony Adams, my ex-husband, who first met and published L.S. Lowry when working for the publisher Lowry, Adams and Mackie. The dominant central mill-chimney was inserted at the lunch when L.S. Lowry learned that I came from the Lancashire mill town of Oldham.

The drawing has been in my possession ever since. I now wish to pass it to Richard Adams, eldest child of my ex-husband'.
