Lot Essay

The present herms have some stylistic similarity to the work of Jean-Melchior Raon (c. 1669-1719). Although more neoclassical in the solemnity of their gaze, the delicately knotted coiffure and intricate designs on the chests of the current lot are reminscient of many of Raon's herms (Souchal, op. cit, pp. 184-5).
