A DECORATIVE PAIR OF SOUTH GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS (PUFFER)
IN GERMAN 16TH CENTURY STYLE
Each with swamped two-stage barrel decorated with three gilt relief chiselled bands of foliage and struck with Augsburg mark together with crowned maker's mark, engraved pierced gilt wheel cover and flat lock, the dog with baluster and ring turned shaft, the pan cover engraved with a hound like creature, gilt foliate engraved dog and safety catch springs, the stock decorated with ebony and finely engraved stag antler depicting a boar hunt between bands of strapwork and foliage, gilt embossed strapwork bands running from the tang to the pommeland underneath the gilt iron trigger guard and trigger, the pommel applied with circular lions masks and gilt bronze relief roundel to the underside depicting skirmishing equestrians, the elmwood ramrods with steel tips probably later
