Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1978
Rhône. Domaine-bottled: Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Six with integrated Malmaison labels: One damaged and one slightly damaged capsule. Three slightly bin-soiled and three stained labels. Levels 2.5cms below base of corks or better. Six with Danish import slip labels: One slightly bin-soiled and one slightly damaged label, otherwise excellent appearance. Levels 2cms or better below base of corks
Tasting note: Opaque plum/garnet-coloured, with a fabulously sweet, youthful bouquet of liquorice, incense, smoked meats, pepper, and blackberry/cassis fruit, the full-bodied 1978 La Chapelle is extremely young with astonishing vigour, velvety tannin, and a full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered personality. The finish lasts for over 60 seconds. Remarkably fresh and not yet fully mature, the super-concentrated 1978 should continue to age well for another three decades. Anticipated maturity: now-2030.
