Lot Essay

'Fitton's later paintings are more illustrative and humorous. Street and cafeteria scenes provided him with an endless source of fascinating material. He delighted in the arrangement of torn posters on a battered wall or scribbled prices displayed in a shop window.' (Exhibition catalogue, James Fitton, 1899-1982, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, 1986, p. 21).

The present lot is based on sketches made in Brixton Market.
