Lot Essay

The sitter is thought to be William Robinson.
This is a rare work by Rochard who is best known for his miniatures. Paris-born, he showed an early interest and talent for portraiture and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. An important early commission was a portrait of the Emperess Josephine, commissioned for Napoleon Bonaparte, which set in motion an active and highly succesful career as a miniature portrait painter for the aristocracy of Europe. He settled in London and spent most of his career based there.
