Lot Essay

Frederick the Great of Prussia, an ally with Britain during the Seven Years War (1756-1763), helped win critical military victories over the French and Austrians in 1757. This success endeared him to the patriotic British public. Staffordshire potters responded with saltglazed objects enameled with his portrait and wares inscribed 'Success to the King of Prussia'. The ermine ground is a heraldic inspired reference to royalty.

For a glazed creamware version of this rare wall-pocket, see The Sampson and Horne Collection, Bonham's, 28 April 2010, lot 362, noted as probably Thomas Whieldon, Fenton, Vivian.
