Lot Essay

Dr Joachim Pissarro has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

According to Dr Joachim Pissarro the theme of the 'negress' was explored by the artist in several Academic figure studies using the same model. These were executed after his arrival in Paris in 1855, probably at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
