THREE 'FORTIFICATION' AGATE SNUFF BOTTLES
1770-1900
The first, 1770-1860, is of rounded, square form and carved on the narrow sides with mask and ring handles. One main side features concentric dark russet markings while the reverse is cleverly carved utilizing the darker markings with a scene of a cat chasing a butterfly. The second, 1790-1900, is of flattened, ovoid form with concentric bands of pale grey, white, and honey-colored striations against the bluish-grey body. The third, 1780-1880, is a miniature bottle of rounded, ovoid form, the stone with a concentric bands of rose-pink and white striations against the grey body. The bottle is surmounted by a gilt-bronze neck and mouth.
