A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE DOUBLE-GOURD-FORM SNUFF BOTTLE

The bottle is carved as a double gourd borne on a sinuous leafy vine with two smaller gourds at its side. The stone is of even white tone with some pale russet mottling.

Lot Essay

The double-gourd shape is a popular one because of its tactile qualities when held in the palm of the hand, and for its auspicious symbolism. The gourd represents abundance, and double gourds represent the extension of the family line through many sons.
