TWO PALE GREENISH-WHITE JADE SHAPED RECTANGULAR PENDANT PLAQUES
18TH/19TH CENTURY
One is carved on one side with a scholar representing Zuo Ci, leaning on a wine jar and holding a wine cup as he floats on a woven mat atop wind-tossed waves below a crane in flight above, and on the reverse with an inscription, feibu lingyun bian jiuzhou, duping dunjia ziao you, signed Zigang zhi. The second plaque is carved on one side with a military figure representing Sun Ce, and on the reverse with an inscription, shaonian ruce conglai wu, bailong yufu kun nitu.

Lot Essay

The figure on the first plaque depicts Zuo Ci, a legendary Taoist personage of the late Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period, the inscription describes him as being able to 'soar above the clouds and reach all corners of the world; invisible to everyone and traveling alone.' The figure on the second plaque depicts Sun Ce, a military general and warlord of the late Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period, and the inscription refers to him as 'an unprecedented and unrivalled hero, a dragon disguised as a fish trapped in a shallow pond.'
